The Ferryman by Justin Cronin

The Ferryman by Justin Cronin Genre: Dystopian / Science Fiction Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very few books get 5 stars from me! What in gods earth did I just read. Review: It may be a long read, but I guarantee you’ll want to slowly devour each chapter until your brain melts! Like many other readers, I fell in love with Cronin reading his Passage trilogy. His style of character development, world-building, and introspective analysis of the internal and external issues issue humanity faces is simply beautiful. Whether you love science fiction or not, this book will not disappoint. This is a fantastic story, delving into the topics of love, loss, hope, deception, corruption, determination and sacrifice. Few books leave a permanent mark, and this is one that surely will! Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced reader copy. Review:

I think I’ve found my fairy godmother.

Kingfisher's writing, whether it be character descriptions or world-building is truly beautiful.

“Nothing is fair, except that we try to make it so. That's the point of humans, maybe, to fix things the gods haven't managed.”

I’ve never been one for fantasy reads beyond the odd dabble into Harry Potter, GoT or anything in the Stephen KING universe, so I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this a lot more than I anticipated.

Each character was fully formed and brought to life, even secondary ones. I never thought I’d feel connected to a dog made of resurrected bones and a demon-possessed pet chicken. Oh, and we must not forget the chilling depiction of Miss Margaret enslaved to her childhood puppet.

The beginning was a slow start and it took a bit longer for me to connect with Marra. However once she had grown on me, along with her crew, I was completely invested in their quest.

Synopsis:

After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.

Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning.

On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.
